Ivan Gašparovič

Ivan Gašparovič, born on 27 March 1941, was a Slovak politician and lawyer. He was the third president of Slovakia from 2004 to 2014. Gašparovič was the first and only Slovak president to be chosen for a second term, showing that many people in his country trusted him. His time as president helped guide Slovakia during an important period.

Biography

Ivan Gašparovič was born in Poltár, near Lučenec and Banská Bystrica in what is now south-central Slovakia. At that time, this area was part of the first Slovak Republic. He studied law at the Comenius University in Bratislava from 1959 to 1964. After finishing his studies, he worked in the District Prosecutor's Office in Martin and later became a Prosecutor in Bratislava. In 1968, he joined the Communist Party of Slovakia to support reforms led by Alexander Dubček. Later that year, troops from several countries invaded Czechoslovakia, and he was expelled from the party.

Early career

Ivan Gašparovič worked as a teacher at a university in Bratislava from 1968 until 1990. After the end of strict government rule in 1990, he became an important legal leader in the country.

In 1992, he joined a political group led by Vladimír Mečiar. He held several important jobs, including leading the country's parliament for a time. In 2002, he left that group and started a new political party, but it did not win many votes.

In 2004, Gašparovič became the president of Slovakia. He was elected because many people wanted to avoid having his opponent, Mečiar, return to power.
