Kazimierz Prószyński

Kazimierz Prószyński (4 April 1875 – 19 March 1945) was a Polish inventor who helped create early cinematography. He made a film camera called the Pleograph, which he patented before the Lumière brothers.

He later worked with the Gaumont company to improve cinema projectors, so movies could be shown more easily in theaters.

One of his most famous inventions was the Aeroscope, the first hand-held camera many people used. This invention changed how films were made and shown, making it easier for people to capture moving images. Prószyński’s work was very important in the early days of cinema and helped shape how we enjoy movies today.

Biography

Kazimierz Prószyński was born in Warsaw and studied in Poland and Belgium. He also worked in France, England, and the United States. His grandfather was a photographer who had trouble for adding Polish patriotic symbols to photos, and his father was an educator and writer, Konrad Prószyński.

In 1894, Prószyński created one of the earliest movie cameras, called the Pleograph, before the famous Lumière brothers did. He also made films in Poland and invented tools to link sound with film.

He later invented the Aeroscope camera in 1909, which used compressed air instead of a hand crank. This helped cameramen hold the camera steady and film from hard-to-reach places, even from airplanes. Many Aeroscope cameras were used by soldiers during World War I and by news teams until newer cameras like Eyemo and Bolex came along.

After Poland became independent in 1918, Prószyński returned home but had trouble finding partners for his inventions. He tried to make a simple camera for schools but faced hard times during the economic crisis of the 1920s. During World War II, he was arrested and later died in 1945.

Prószyński is remembered as a key pioneer of Polish cinema, along with Bolesław Matuszewski and Jan Szczepanik.
