Lower Franconia

Lower Franconia, called Unterfranken in German, is one of the seven districts in Bavaria in Germany. It is part of a larger area named Franconia, which also includes Middle and Upper Franconia.

Lower Franconia has nine smaller districts and 308 towns and cities, including three large cities. This area has its own unique culture and history, making it an important part of Bavaria.

History

After the Kingdom of Bavaria was created, the land was reorganised. In 1808, it was split into 15 areas. Over time, the number of areas changed. One area was called the Untermainkreis (Lower Main District). In 1837, King Ludwig I of Bavaria gave these areas new names. The Untermainkreis became Lower Franconia and Aschaffenburg.

In 1972, many smaller areas in Lower Franconia were combined into just nine larger ones.

The main part of the Franconian wine region lies in Lower Franconia.

Economy

The economy of Lower Franconia was strong in 2018. The value of goods and services made there was about 53.7 billion euros. This was an important part of Germany’s economy.

People in the area could travel by plane using two big airports nearby: Frankfurt Airport and Nuremberg Airport.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms shows the Franconian Rake, a symbol of the old Duchy of Franconia, at the top. On the left, there is a banner called the "Rennfähnlein" on a blue background, which represents Würzburg. On the right, there is a white wheel on a red background, symbolizing the church state of Mainz.
