Marriott Hotels & Resorts

Marriott Hotels & Resorts is a brand owned by Marriott International. It offers full-service hotels and resorts all around the world. The main office is located in Bethesda, Maryland.

As of June 30, 2020, the brand had many hotels and resorts with thousands of rooms. There were also plans to build more hotels in the future. These places give travelers comfortable places to stay in many different countries.

History

Foundation and early years

Marriott Hotels started when a restaurant company decided to open hotels. The first one opened in 1957 in Virginia, near The Pentagon and Washington National Airport. Soon after, more hotels opened in places like Dallas, Philadelphia, and Atlanta. By 1967, the company had changed its name to Marriott Corporation and had eight hotels.

Marriott also opened resorts and hotels outside the United States. In 1967, it bought a famous hotel in Arizona, and in 1969, it opened its first hotel outside the U.S. in Mexico. More hotels followed in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Development since 2000

By 1999, Marriott had over 360 hotels in many countries. In 2010, they opened their 500th hotel in India. In 2013, Marriott promised to use only cage-free eggs in its hotels by 2025.

In 2020, Marriott had a problem in the UK that let hackers take customer information. Later in 2022, another problem happened, and hackers got more information from Marriott hotels. In 2023, there were also some problems in Poland with one of Marriott's hotels.

• Arlington, Virginia, United States: The Marriott Motor Hotel Twin Bridges was the first place to stay opened by J. Willard Marriott, in 1957. It closed in 1988 and was torn down.
• Atlanta, Georgia, United States: The Atlanta Marriott Marquis had the largest hotel space inside when it opened in 1985. It was designed by architect John C. Portman Jr..
• Baltimore, Maryland, United States: The Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel is the tallest hotel in Baltimore.
• Bangkok, Thailand: The Bangkok Marriott Hotel The Surawongse opened in 2018.
• Buffalo, New York, United States: The LECOM Harborcenter is a building with many uses that includes the Buffalo Marriott at LECOM Harborcenter.
• Cairo, Egypt: The Marriott Mena House Hotel is part of an old place to stay north of the Giza pyramid complex. It was built in 1869 and became a hotel in 1886. In 1977, leaders from Egypt and Israel met there to talk about peace. In 2018, part of the hotel became a Marriott.
• Cardiff, United Kingdom: The Cardiff Marriott Hotel is near the Cardiff Central Library. Marriott began managing the hotel in 1992.
• Casablanca, Morocco: The former Sheraton Casablanca Hotel & Towers became the Casablanca Marriott Hotel after a change in 2022.
• Chicago, Illinois, United States: The Marriott Marquis Chicago is connected to the McCormick Place, a big place for meetings, by a walk over the street.
• Constantine, Algeria: The Constantine Marriott Hotel is built in the style of old Moorish design.
• Des Moines, Iowa, United States: The Des Moines Marriott Hotel is the tallest hotel in Iowa.
• Detroit, Michigan, United States: The Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center is in the tallest building of the Renaissance Center, by the Detroit International Riverfront and owned by General Motors.
• Dubai, United Arab Emirates: The Dubai Marriott Harbour Hotel & Suites, opened in 2007, became a Marriott in 2009. It is in the Dubai Marina.
• George Town, Malaysia: The Marriott Residences Penang is the second tallest building in the city.
• Hong Kong, China: The Hong Kong SkyCity entertainment place, next to the Hong Kong International Airport, includes the Hong Kong SkyCity Marriott Hotel, the first hotel in the city to serve halal food.
• Houston, Texas, United States: The Marriott Marquis Houston is connected to the George R. Brown Convention Center by a walk over the street.
• Indianapolis, Indiana, United States: The Indianapolis Marriott Downtown was the largest hotel in Indiana when it was built in 2001.
• Islamabad, Pakistan: The Islamabad Marriott Hotel is in an area with views of the Margalla Hills near the Himalayas.
• Kaohsiung, Taiwan: Kaohsiung Marriott Hotel is the second Marriott in Taiwan and the largest Marriott hotel in Asia with 700 rooms.
• Liverpool, United Kingdom: The Crowne Plaza Liverpool John Lennon Airport Hotel was once managed by Marriott.

• Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States: The Minneapolis Marriott City Center Hotel is the tallest hotel in Minneapolis.
• Miri, Malaysia: The Miri Marriott Resort & Spa is the first hotel with an international brand name in Miri.
• Montreal, Québec, Canada: The Château Champlain, near the Place du Canada, was built for Expo 67 and was the tallest hotel in Canada at the time. It became a Marriott in 1995.
• New Castle, New Hampshire, United States: The historic Wentworth by the Sea resort was managed by Marriott between 2003 and 2023.
• New Orleans, Louisiana, United States: The New Orleans Marriott is one of the tallest buildings in New Orleans.
• New York City, United States:
  • The New York Marriott Marquis, located on Times Square and designed by John C. Portman Jr., is one of the largest hotels in the city. It has a theatre on the third floor.
  • The Marriott World Trade Center, formerly the Vista International Hotel before 1995, was part of the World Trade Center. The hotel was damaged in 1993 and destroyed in 2001. The hotel was not rebuilt, but the address was used for a new skyscraper in 2018.
• Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada: The Niagara Falls Marriott Fallsview Hotel & Spa and Niagara Falls Marriott on the Falls are two Marriott hotels near Niagara Falls. The first opened in 1998, and the second opened as a Sheraton in 1993 before becoming a Marriott in 2011.
• Noord, Aruba: The Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino was built in 1995 in the town of Noord.
• Norfolk, United States: The Norfolk Waterside Marriott is a well-known building in Downtown Norfolk.
• Norwich, United Kingdom: The Sprowston Manor was managed by Marriott between 1973 and 2018.
• Orlando, Florida, United States: With 2,008 rooms, the Orlando World Center Marriott is the largest Marriott in the world. It opened in 1986 and is near the Walt Disney World complex.
• Ottawa, Ontario, Canada: The Ottawa Marriott Hotel opened as a Holiday Inn in 1971. Ottawa's only spinning room, Summit, is on the hotel's roof.
• Paradise Valley, Arizona, United States: In 1968, the Camelback Inn was bought by Bill Marriott. It became Marriott's first resort. In 2003, it was renovated and became a JW Marriott.
• Peoria, Illinois, United States: The Peoria Marriott Pere Marquette is the city's only fancy hotel from the 1920s. It was designed by Horace Trumbauer.
• Portland, Oregon, United States:
  • The Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront opened as the Portland Marriott Hotel in 1980.
  • The Bidwell Marriott Portland opened as the Portland Marriott City Center in 1996. It got its current name after a renovation in 2021.

• San Antonio, Texas, United States: The San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter is the tallest building in San Antonio and the tallest hotel in Texas outside Dallas. It is near the Henry B. González Convention Center and has direct access to the San Antonio River Walk.
• San Francisco, California, United States: The San Francisco Marriott Marquis is known for its modern style and is the second-tallest hotel in San Francisco. It opened on the same day as the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake but was not badly damaged.
• St. Louis, Missouri, United States: The Marriott St. Louis Grand Hotel was originally a Statler Hotel that became part of Hilton in 1954. It joined Marriott in 2015 after being closed for several years.
• Syracuse, New York, United States: The Marriott Syracuse Downtown is a historic hotel that opened in 1924. It joined Marriott in 2015 after a big renovation.
• Taipei, Taiwan: The Taipei Marriott Hotel is in the Yihwa International Complex.
• Tbilisi, Georgia: The Tbilisi Marriott Hotel was built to be the finest hotel in Tbilisi in 1915. It was a hotel again in 1939 and became a Marriott in 2002.
• Thundridge, United Kingdom: The Hanbury Manor is an old Victorian house turned into a hotel in 1990.
• Washington, D.C., United States:
  • The Washington Marriott Wardman Park was taken over by Marriott in 1998. The hotel's Wardman Tower is from 1928. The hotel closed in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The Marriott Marquis Washington, DC is connected to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center by a walk underground, and most guests are there for meetings.
• Yerevan, Armenia: The Armenia Marriott Hotel Yerevan, near the Republic Square, opened as the Armenia Hotel in 1959. It became a Marriott in 1999 and is the second-largest hotel in the country.
• Nagoya, Japan: The Nagoya Marriott Associa hotel is a 52-story hotel above Nagoya station, connected to the station by a walkway.
