Nassau, Bahamas

Nassau is the capital and largest city of The Bahamas. It is on the island of New Providence, where most people in the country live. Nassau is very important for business, schools, government, and news in The Bahamas.

The main airport for the country, Lynden Pindling International Airport, is near Nassau. It has daily flights to many big cities in Canada, the Caribbean, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Nassau is also where the country's government meets and where important courts are located. Long ago, Nassau was known as a place where pirates were active. The city was named after William III of England, Prince of Orange-Nassau.

Nassau began to grow in the late 1700s when many Loyalists and others moved there after the American War of Independence. These new settlers became a big part of the city's population. Over time, the city spread across the whole island. Before the mid-1900s, many areas outside the city were mostly empty land. The Loyalists created farms in places like Clifton and Tusculum.

When the British stopped the slave trade in 1807, they brought many freed Africans to live on New Providence, including places like Adelaide Village and Gambier Village. Some people from American ships, like the Creole, were also allowed to settle there after being freed. Most African descendants lived in areas called Grants Town and Bain Town, south of Nassau, while many people of European background lived along the northern coast of the island.

History

The city of Nassau was founded in 1670 by British settlers. They named it Charles Town after England’s King Charles II. It was used as a base during wars with nearby Spain. In 1684, the city was burned down but rebuilt and renamed Nassau in honor of King William III.

In the early 1700s, Nassau became a place where pirates gathered. The British sent a new leader to restore order, and by 1718, the town was brought back under control. Over time, Nassau grew and became an important place for trade and later, a popular tourist spot.

Geography

Nassau is on New Providence Island. The city has a beautiful harbour with old buildings and a busy port. Because it is tropical and lovely, many tourists visit.

Nassau grew near the port. New Providence Island has flat land and a few small hills. In the middle of the island, there are shallow lakes linked to the tides.

Nassau is close to the United States, only 290 kilometres or 180 miles from Miami, Florida. This made it a popular place to visit, especially after travel to Cuba stopped in 1963. The Atlantis resort on nearby Paradise Island brings in many visitors and employs many people.

Climate

Nassau has a tropical monsoon climate (Köppen: Am), meaning hot, wet summers and mild, dry winters. Temperatures stay about the same all year. From May to October, daytime temperatures are usually 86–90 °F (30–32 °C). From November to April, they are between 77 and 81 °F (25 and 27 °C), and rarely drop below 59 °F (15 °C).

Urban development

In the 1800s, Nassau grew as people moved there from the countryside. Since the 1950s, the city has spread out. The centre of Nassau in 1788 was just a few blocks between Government House and the harbour. Over time, the city grew east, south, and west. Areas like Grants Town and Bain Town became homes for many people.

People of European descent built homes along the shore, stretching east and west. In the 1900s, the city kept growing. After World War II, development continued to spread.

Recently, new neighbourhoods for families have been built. The government also made affordable housing areas in places like Yellow Elder and Pinewood Gardens.

The city centre is the busiest part of Nassau. Many people come here to shop, eat, see sights, and enjoy the weather. The main area is around Bay Street and Woodes Rogers Walk, close to the port. This area stretches several blocks in every direction, starting near West Bay and the Junkanoo Beach.

Along Bay Street, you’ll find the British Colonial Hotel, followed by the Pirates of Nassau Museum near the British Colonial Hilton. The street has shops, restaurants, and clubs. Important places nearby include Vendue House, Christ Church Cathedral, and the Nassau Public Library. The Straw Market is a popular spot in the city centre. A new market opened in 2011 after the old one was destroyed by a fire. The market has many stores selling handmade crafts.
