Early Life and Career

Pindar was an Ancient Greek poet who lived in Thebes from about 518 to 438 BC. He is one of the greatest poets of ancient Greece. His poems are very grand and full of beautiful ideas, but they can be hard to understand.

Works

Pindar wrote many poems called lyric poems. They tell us about the beliefs and values of people in Archaic Greece. Pindar thought deeply about what poetry is and what a poet should do. He believed people could achieve great things with the help of the gods.

One of his famous poems says: "Creatures of a day! What is anyone? What is anyone not? A dream of a shadow Is our mortal being. But when there comes to men A gleam of splendour given of heaven, Then rests on them a light of glory And blessed are their days."

Biography

Pindar was an Ancient Greek poet from a city named Thebes. He wrote special poems called lyric poems, and many of his poems have lasted until today. People who studied writing, like Quintilian, thought Pindar was one of the greatest poets for his beautiful ideas and strong words. Some of his poems can be tricky to understand.
