Premier of Tasmania

Adapted from Wikipedia · Adventurer experience

Portrait of William Champ, the first Premier of Tasmania, taken in 1856.

The premier of Tasmania is the head of government of the Australian state of Tasmania. This person leads the cabinet of Tasmania and chooses ministers who help run the state. The premier is chosen by the governor based on who can get the most support in the House of Assembly.

Since April 8, 2022, Jeremy Rockliff, from the Liberal Party, has been the premier. His party does not have a majority of seats, so he works with other smaller groups like the Jacqui Lambie Network, the Greens, and independents to keep his government running.

Jeremy Rockliff is one of the lowest-paid leaders in Australia. In 2025, he chose not to take a big pay increase, keeping his salary smaller than it could have been.

List of premiers of Tasmania

Before the 1890s, Tasmania did not have formal political parties. Today, we choose the premier from the House of Assembly, but this only began in the late 19th century. Before that, eight premiers were chosen from the Legislative Council. The last of these was Philip Fysh, who served from 1887 to 1892.
