Origins and Meaning

Punjabi culture began in areas near five rivers. The name Punjab comes from two Persian words: Panj meaning "Five" and Âb meaning "Water". These rivers made the land important for travel to the Near East long ago.

Agriculture and Economy

Agriculture has always played a big role in Punjab. From the mid-1960s to mid-1970s, the Green Revolution helped Punjab grow lots of food for both India and Pakistan. People often measured a person's success by how much land they owned.

History and Values

Because Punjab was on a major travel route, it often saw battles. Over time, this created a strong sense of honor, called izzat, which is very important to people from Punjab.

Music

Bhangra is a popular style of music from Punjab that many people enjoy. Musicians in other countries often mix Punjabi music with their own styles to create new songs. Other important types of music from Punjab include Sufi music and Qawali, especially in Pakistani Punjab.

Punjabi music changed in the 20th century when it began to mix with Western styles like pop, rock, and hip-hop. This created a new kind of Punjabi music that combines modern sounds with traditional instruments and melodies.

One modern artist is Diljit Dosanjh. He has helped bring Punjabi culture to the world. In recent years, he has performed at big events and shared Punjabi music with people everywhere.

Dance

Punjabi dances are performed by men or women. Some dances are done alone, while others are done in groups, often with traditional musical instruments. Bhangra is a well-known dance that started with farmers during harvest time. They would dance while doing their farm work, making their tasks more fun. Over time, bhangra has become popular for many celebrations, not just harvests. It is usually done in a circle with special dance steps. Another famous dance is Giddha, which is performed by women and has been around for thousands of years. It celebrates beauty and grace.

Art

Painting in the Punjab began during the rule of Iltutmish from the Khilji dynasty. Sikh art, including Sikh painting, comes from this area. Punjabi painting started in the 1500s and was later influenced by Mughal styles.

Early Punjabi Sikh art included wall paintings for religious places.

From about 1810 to 1830, Sikh leaders asked artists from the Punjab Hills to paint pictures of important people. After 1830, European styles began to influence Punjabi art. This mix created Company paintings. Artists in Lahore and Amritsar started using watercolour instead of gouache.

Wall paintings

Murals, including frescoes, are important in Punjab. These wall paintings show many different topics.

Religious-themed murals are often found in Hindu and Sikh temples. They show scenes from stories like the Mahabharata.

There are also murals about Sikh history, showing Sikh gurus and other important religious figures.

Secular murals often show stories from Punjabi folklore, such as Heer Ranjha, Mirza Sahiban, and Sohni Mahiwal.

Punjabi wedding traditions are important in the culture and are often in the Punjabi language. Whether Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, or Christians, the weddings share many similar rituals, songs, dances, foods, and clothes. These traditions have changed over time in both Pakistani Punjab and Indian Punjab.

Tandoori chicken is a popular dish in Punjabi cuisine.

The food of Punjab is shaped by its long history of farming and its rich land. Many favorite dishes, like tandoori chicken, have roots going back thousands of years. Experts have found old ovens and chicken bones that show people in Punjab were cooking tasty meals long ago.

Punjab is also famous for its special Basmati rice, which is used in many dishes with meat and vegetables. The way people cook in Punjab has stayed the same, using spices and traditional methods.

Punjabi literature has a long and rich history. It began with writings from the Nath Yogi era. A key figure is Fariduddin Ganjshakar. From the 12th to the 19th century, many poets shared beautiful Sufi poetry. Punjabi poets preferred the Kafi, unlike other poets who used the ghazal.

Punjabi Sufi poetry inspired many stories, called the Punjabi Qissa. These are romantic tales. One famous story is Heer Ranjha by Waris Shah. Other well-known stories include Sohni Mahiwal, Mirza Sahiba, Sassi Punnun, and Puran Bhagat.

Dastar

A Dastar is a special head covering linked to Sikhism. It is very important in Punjabi and Sikh culture. For Sikhs, the dastār shows respect and faith. Sikh men and women who follow the Five Ks wear the turban to cover their long hair (kesh). The dastār is a key part of Sikh identity.

Punjabi suit

A Punjabi suit has two pieces: a qameez (top) and salwar (bottom). This is the traditional clothing of the Punjabi people. Shalwars are special trousers that are wide at the waist and narrow at the bottom. The kameez is a long shirt or tunic. The shalwar-kameez is widely worn and is the national dress of Pakistan. When women wear it, they often also wear a long scarf called a dupatta around their head or neck. This scarf is used by many women in South Asia.

Punjabi Muslims celebrate Islamic festivals. These festivals follow the lunar Islamic calendar and happen earlier each year.

Punjabi Sikhs and Hindus celebrate seasonal festivals like Lohri, Basant, and Vaisakhi. The dates of these festivals change a little each year.

Habitational culture

Punjabi villages, called pinds, are special groups of families. Villages are split into parts called pattis. These pattis are groups of houses around a street, called a gali or bihi. The pattis are often named after the families who live there. Sometimes, a patti is split into smaller parts called thulas or als.

Villages can also be split into areas called vehra or yards. These areas can be linked to certain families or groups. These ways of splitting the village help families and clans stay connected.

Preservation of Punjabi culture

In recent years, people have worked hard to keep Punjabi culture alive. A great example is the Panjab Digital Library (PDL), started by Davinder Pal Singh. The PDL aims to save old books, papers, and other items that tell the story of the Punjabi language, history, and traditions. This helps make sure that Punjabi culture is protected and can be shared with everyone for years to come.
