Sarah Brightman, born on 14 August 1960, is an English classical crossover soprano singer and actress. She started her career in the dance troupe Hot Gossip and later released some disco songs.
Her big break came in 1981 when she debuted in the West End musical Cats, where she met composer Andrew Lloyd Webber. She became famous for playing Christine Daaé in The Phantom of the Opera, a role she created.
After leaving the stage, Brightman returned to music with the help of producer Frank Peterson, focusing on classical crossover songs. She is known as one of the most successful performers in this genre. One of her most famous songs was a 1996 duet with Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli called "Time to Say Goodbye", which became very popular.
Brightman has received many awards for her music. She has performed for large audiences, including at the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992 and Beijing in 2008. In 2012, she was named a UNESCO Artist for Peace for her work supporting humanitarian causes. She has also been a global brand ambassador for Panasonic since 2010.
Family and early life
Sarah Brightman grew up in Little Gaddesden near Berkhamsted, England, as the oldest of six children. She began taking dance and piano lessons at three years old and performed in local events and contests. When she was 11, she joined the Tring Park School for the Performing Arts, a school for performing arts.
She studied at several schools, including the Elmhurst Ballet School, the Arts Educational School in Chiswick, and the Royal College of Music. At age 13, she appeared in a play called I and Albert, acting as one of Queen Victoria's daughters. She later joined a dance group called Hot Gossip and sang many popular songs. She also released her own music and appeared in movies.
Career
1981–1989: Stage career
In 1981, Sarah Brightman tried out for the musical Cats by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and was chosen to play a character named Jemima. After a year in Cats, she took over another role in The Pirates of Penzance and also appeared in a musical called Masquerade.
Andrew Lloyd Webber noticed her talent and they married in 1984. She then performed in his later musicals, such as The Phantom of the Opera and Song and Dance. Her recording of "Pie Jesu" became very popular.
1990s: Solo career
In the 1990s, Brightman began performing solo. She sang at big events like the Barcelona Olympic Games and worked with other musicians to create albums. Her album Timeless/Time to Say Goodbye became one of her most successful.
2000–2004: Further international success
Brightman continued to make popular albums and went on tours around the world. Her albums La Luna and Harem were especially well liked. She performed in many countries and her concerts were very popular.
2006–2008: Diva, Symphony and Beijing Olympics appearance
Brightman released collections of her music videos and greatest hits albums. She performed at special events, including a concert to honor Princess Diana and the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, where she sang with a Chinese star.
2009–2010: Symphony: Live in Vienna and UNESCO World Heritage Sites concerts

In 1983, Brightman divorced Graham-Stewart and later that year, Lloyd Webber divorced his first wife. They married in 1984. Their relationship got a lot of attention from the media and tabloid newspapers until they divorced in 1990. They stayed good friends. In 2006, Lloyd Webber praised Brightman, and she performed at the 25th anniversary of the musical in 2011. He also appeared as a special guest in her 1997 concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
Brightman had a long relationship with Frank Peterson. They tried to have children but were not successful. In a 2006 interview with British magazine Hello!, she said she would have liked to be a mother but accepted that she would never have a child.
Charity work
Sarah Brightman has helped many important causes. In 2012, she became an "Artist for Peace" Ambassador for UNESCO and helped with their World Heritage Centre projects. She started a scholarship program to help young women in the US study science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Brightman has helped people after natural disasters, like donating money to those affected by Hurricane Ingrid in Mexico. She works with the Challenger Center to inspire children to learn about space and science through fun activities. She has also supported research for diseases and offered music scholarships for students.
