Shooting at the 1936 Summer Olympics – Men's 50 metre pistol
The men's 50-metre pistol event was part of the shooting sports at the 1936 Summer Olympics. It was the sixth time this event had been held.
The competition took place on August 6th and 7th, 1936, at the shooting ranges in Wannsee.
Forty-three shooters from nineteen countries took part. Each country could send up to three shooters.
Torsten Ullman from Sweden won the gold medal. This was Sweden’s first medal in this event. Erich Krempel from Germany won the silver medal. This was Germany’s first medal in this event. Charles des Jammonières from France won the bronze medal. This was France’s first medal in this event since 1900.
Background
This was the sixth time the men's ISSF 50 meter pistol event was held. It happened at every Summer Olympics from 1896 to 1920 (except 1904) and again from 1936 to 2016. In 1896 and 1908, the distance was not 50 metres.
The world champion from 1933 and 1935 was Torsten Ullman of Sweden. Charles des Jammonières from France was second in 1933, and Erich Krempel from Germany was second in 1935.
Argentina, Czechoslovakia, Italy, Monaco, the Philippines, Portugal, and Romania were all competing for the first time. Greece and the United States each competed for the fifth time.
Ullman used a special pistol called the Udo Anschütz Record 210.
Competition format
In this event, each shooter fired 60 shots from 50 metres away. The target was a circle 50 centimetres wide with 10 rings for scoring. Each shot could earn up to 10 points, so the highest possible total was 600 points. Any type of pistol was allowed, but shooters could not use special glasses. The competition had to be finished in two hours. If two shooters had the same score, the one with more hits near the centre would win.
Records
Before this race, there were world and Olympic records. During the race, the top 33 shooters broke an old Olympic record that was 36 years old. The 34th shooter tied this record. Erich Krempel had the new Olympic record after the first day, but Torsten Ullman broke the world record on the second day.
Schedule
On August 6, 1936, shooters from countries like Argentina, Chile, Italy, and Germany began their competition. The next day, shooters from all other countries joined in. The competition started at 8 a.m. each day.
The weather on the first day was dry and overcast, with some wind. On the second day, it was sunny in the morning and overcast in the afternoon. It was warmer with no wind.
