The Stade de Luxembourg (Stadium of Luxembourg) is the national stadium of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, found in the Luxembourg City quarter of Gasperich. It is a key place for sports, where Luxembourg's national football and rugby teams play their home games. The stadium can also host big matches, like the final of the Coupe de Luxembourg, and is approved by UEFA to hold international games.

Building the stadium took place from September 2017 to July 2021, which was later than the planned date of 2019. The stadium had its first big match on 1 September 2021, when Luxembourg played against Azerbaijan as part of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. A special opening ceremony happened later that month on 25 September. The Stade de Luxembourg took the place of the older Josy Barthel stadium, which is now planned to be torn down.

Design and construction

The design for the stadium was made by a local company called Beng Architectes Associés, working with a team from Hamburg called Gerkan, Marg and Partners. The design was chosen in September 2014 by Luxembourg’s Minister of Sport and the Mayor of Luxembourg City.

Construction started in March 2017, and a special ceremony was held on September 18, 2017, with Mayor Lydie Polfer. It was supposed to be finished by October 2019 and cost about 61.1 million euros. But it took longer than planned and was finally finished in July 2021, costing around 80 million euros.

Specifications

The Stade de Luxembourg is next to the A6 motorway. It faces east to west, not the usual north to south. It can hold 9,386 people for sports with roofs over all seats, and up to 15,000 for concerts. The biggest seats are on the south side. The field uses a special hybrid grass because it hosts both football and rugby games, as well as some concerts.

Name

The stadium is called "Stade de Luxembourg." The name was announced in July 2020. In September that year, the Luxembourg Chamber of Deputies decided not to change the name to use the Luxembourgish language. The request did not get enough support to go ahead.

Public transit

Since July 2024, the new tramline to Luxembourg City has a stop called "Stadion." You can take the tram to get to the stadium easily.

There is a big parking lot next to the stadium. It has space for 2,000 cars.
