The 1972 Summer Olympics took place in Munich, West Germany. Swimming was one of the fun sports, with 29 different races and swimmers from 52 countries.
One of the biggest stars was Mark Spitz. He swam in seven races and won gold in all of them, breaking world records each time. Years later, Michael Phelps did the same thing at the 2008 Olympics.
On the women's side, Shane Gould from Australia was amazing. She won five medals, including gold in the 200 m and 400 m freestyle and the 200 m individual medley. Another young swimmer, 15-year-old American Sandy Neilson, won three gold medals. In every event at these Olympics, someone broke the old record.

Shane Gould won gold in the 200-metre and 400-metre freestyle, as well as the 200-metre individual medley. John Hencken won gold in the 200-metre breaststroke. Brad Cooper won gold in the 400-metre freestyle. Roland Matthes won gold in the 100-metre and 200-metre backstroke events. Cathy Carr won gold in the 100-metre breaststroke and the 4 × 100-metre medley relay. Melissa Belote won gold in the 100-metre and 200-metre backstroke, as well as the 4 × 100-metre medley relay.
