WTXL-TV
WTXL-TV (channel 27) was a television station in Tallahassee, Florida, United States. It showed shows from ABC and was owned by the E. W. Scripps Company. The station’s studio was on Commerce Boulevard in Midway, Florida. Its tower for sending out the signal was near a place called Fincher, close to the border with Georgia, in northwestern Jefferson County, Florida.
History
WTXL-TV began broadcasting on September 16, 1976, as WECA-TV. It was owned by a local businessman and was the second commercial station in the Tallahassee area. Before WTXL, only one station, WCTV, served the area.
In 1984, new owners changed the station's call letters to WTXL-TV. Over the years, WTXL has had different owners and shared studios with other stations. In 2006, WTXL built its own studios in Midway, Florida, and moved in by 2007. Today, WTXL is an ABC affiliate owned by the E. W. Scripps Company.
News operation
WTXL broadcasts more than 28 hours of local news each week. It shows 4 ½ hours of news on weekdays, and 3 hours on Saturdays and Sundays.
WTXL is often second in popularity behind another local station, WCTV. Another station, WTWC, tried to show local news but was not successful. WTXL helped WTWC with some news programs, like morning and evening updates, and also gave special weather reports when needed.
In 2001, WTXL started a prime-time news show for a cable station called "WBXT." The show ran for thirty minutes and was later renamed a few times. It was canceled in 2003. In 2007, WTXL moved to new studios and became the first station in the area to show news in high definition. In 2018, WTXL updated its news graphics and music. In 2019, it introduced new graphics, a new set, and fresh music for its news programs.
