History

Advance Publications is named after the Staten Island Advance, the first newspaper owned by the Newhouse family. Sam Newhouse bought a controlling interest in this newspaper in 1922.

Description

For most of its history, Advance Publications did not have an official main office. Many of its publications listed offices in the Grasmere area of Staten Island as their main place of work.

Advance ran a news service in Washington, D.C., called the Newhouse News Service. It started in 1961 and provided news to all of Advance's publications. The service closed in late 2008 because of money problems during the 2008 financial crisis.

As of November 2019, Advance was ranked as the 221st largest privately held company in the United States, according to Forbes.
