Arizona Western College (AWC) is a public community college located in Yuma, Arizona. It provides many different educational programs, including associate degrees, occupational certificates, and transfer degrees that help students move on to four-year universities. The college also has classes in several nearby communities, such as Dateland, Parker, San Luis, Somerton, and Wellton, making education accessible to more people in the area.
Academics
Arizona Western College provides more than 100 different degrees and certificates that you can take in person or online. Some of the associate degrees they offer include Arts, Science, Business, and Applied Science.
On-campus housing
Arizona Western College is one of the few community colleges in the United States to offer places for students to live on the school grounds. The main campus has three buildings where students can stay, and these can hold up to 348 students.
Student life
Arizona Western College has over 50 clubs and groups for students. These clubs focus on different interests like math, music, sports, cooking, and even chess. Students can join these groups to meet new friends and learn new skills.
Athletics
Arizona Western College's sports teams are called the Matadors. They play in two big groups: the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC).
The Matadors have eight teams: four for men and four for women. Men’s sports include baseball, basketball, football, and soccer. Women’s sports are basketball, soccer, softball, and volleyball. Some of these teams have helped players become professional athletes. In 2014, the football team won a big game called the El Toro Bowl and finished the season with 11 wins and only 1 loss.
Notable alumni
Arizona Western College has helped many students become successful athletes. Some well-known graduates include Rafael Araujo and Nate Archibald, who both played professional basketball, as well as several players in American football and baseball such as Randy Gregory, Crawford Ker, Bengie Molina, Sergio Romo, Leonard Thompson, Jesse Williams, Cameron Young, and Damien Williams. The college also has college basketball players like Yaxel Lendeborg who have gone on to play at higher levels.
