Format
Twelve teams were divided into two groups of six teams each during the basketball event at the 2000 Summer Olympics. The top four teams from each group moved on to the knockout stage. Teams that finished fifth and sixth in their groups played extra matches for ninth and eleventh places respectively.
In the quarterfinals, specific matchups were set up: the first-place team from one group played the fourth-place team from the other group, and so on. Losers from certain quarterfinal matches played for fifth and sixth places. The winners of the quarterfinals faced off in the semifinals, and the semifinal winners competed for the gold medal, while the losers played for the bronze. If teams were tied, they used head-to-head results, goal average between tied teams, and overall goal average in the group as tie-breaking steps.
