The bay serves as a place where water from the Chucunaque-Tuira Basin flows into the Pacific Ocean. It receives its water from the Chucunaque and Tuira rivers, which cover much of Darién Province. At the southern end of the bay lies Cape Garachiné, also known as Point Garachina, while Punta San Lorenzo, or Cape Gardo, marks its northern end.
