Biography
Cary Augustus Hardee was born on November 13, 1876, in Taylor County, Florida and grew up in Live Oak, Florida. He started as a teacher and later became a lawyer in 1900. He also helped start banks, including the First National Bank of Live Oak in 1902.
Hardee entered public service in 1905 as a state's attorney. He served in the Florida House of Representations from 1915 to 1919 and was even chosen as its Speaker. He became governor of Florida on January 4, 1921. During his time as governor, new counties were formed, and changes were made to how the state managed its money and roads. He also stopped a practice that sent people in prison to work for private companies after a sad event involving someone named Martin Tabert.
After leaving office on January 6, 1925, Hardee tried to become governor again in 1932 but was not successful. He continued working in banking until he passed away in 1957.
