Chakri dynasty
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
The Chakri dynasty, also called the House of Chakri, is the ruling family of the Kingdom of Thailand. The dynasty began in 1782 when Rama I became king, moving the capital to Bangkok. Before becoming king, Rama I was known as Chakri, and he chose this name for his family.
Rama I was a strong leader from the old Ayutthaya area. The symbol of the Chakri dynasty is a discus and a trident, representing ancient gods. Some historians say the family comes from both Mon and Chinese backgrounds.
Today, the head of the Chakri dynasty is King Vajiralongkorn. He became king after the death of his father, Bhumibol Adulyadej, in 2016. His official ceremony to become king happened in Bangkok in 2019 at the Grand Palace.
Royal family
The current royal family of Thailand belongs to the House of Mahidol, a branch of the Chakri dynasty. This house was started by Prince Mahidol Adulyadej and Princess Srinagarindra. Prince Mahidol was a son of King Chulalongkorn. After the death of King Ananda Mahidol, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, another son of Prince Mahidol, became king in 1946. In 1949, he married Sirikit Kitiyakara. Bhumibol was followed by his son Vajiralongkorn in 2016.
