Ciena Corporation is an American company that makes important tools for connecting the internet. It is based in Hanover, Maryland and helps make sure that information can travel quickly and safely around the world. As of November 2025, Ciena had more than 9,000 employees and made about $4.8 billion in sales.
Big companies like AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, KT Corporation, and Verizon Communications use Ciena's technology to keep their networks running smoothly. History
Ciena was started in 1992 under the name HydraLite by electrical engineer David R. Huber. Optelecom, a company that makes networking tools, helped with managing the business, and another person named Kevin Kimberlin helped with money to start the company. In 1994, the company changed its name to Ciena and began working from an office in Dallas.
The company made its first products in 1996 for a big customer named Sprint Corporation. By 1997, Ciena had become very successful and was listed on the stock market. Over the years, Ciena has bought many smaller companies to grow its business and now makes products for big companies all over the world.
Since 2000s
During a tough time for many companies in the early 2000s, Ciena managed to grow by buying other companies and adding new technology to its products. By 2015, Ciena was making good money again and had more employees. The company has kept growing and in 2024, it made over $4 billion in sales.

Operations in India

Ciena makes equipment, software, and services for the telecommunications industry and large cloud service firms. Their products help move and manage voice and data traffic on communications networks.
Ciena’s network equipment includes optical switches and routing platforms to handle data on telecommunications networks. In 2019, they launched the WaveLogic 5 modem platform, which can handle up to 800G of network capacity. They also provide technology for undersea cable networks.
Their Blue Planet software platform helps telecom companies program their networks. It uses machine learning to analyze network problems and suggest actions to prevent outages and disruptions.
