Deaf basketball

Adapted from Wikipedia Β· Discoverer experience

Deaf basketball is a special way of playing basketball where the players are deaf. In this version of the game, players use sign language instead of talking or hearing the whistle. This helps everyone understand the game better and work together as a team. Deaf basketball shows how sports can be fun and fair for everyone, no matter how they hear or communicate. It’s an important part of making sure all people can enjoy playing together.

National associations

Basketball for deaf players is organized by special groups in many countries. These include Deaf Basketball Australia, Deaf Basketball UK, and the United States of America Deaf Basketball. These groups help arrange games and events for deaf basketball players.

Players

Deaf basketball has become well-known because of athletes like Lance Allred, who played basketball with the National Basketball Association's (NBA) Cleveland Cavaliers. Allred has trouble hearing, with about 75-80% hearing loss, and uses a hearing aid. He later played basketball professionally in European leagues.

Another famous deaf basketball player is Miha Zupan from Slovenia. He was born with a similar hearing impairment to Allred and plays as a power forward at the top professional level in Europe.

Deaf International Basketball Federation

The Deaf International Basketball Federation (DIBF) is the main group that helps organize basketball for deaf people around the world. It works with big groups like the International Basketball Federation and the Deaflympics. In February 2003, the DIBF became an independent group during the Winter Deaflympics in Sundsvall, Sweden.

The DIBF helps grow deaf basketball everywhere by teaching and organizing events. It plans and runs international competitions and keeps track of the history of these games, from the first international contests to today.
