Language and religion
Main article: Religion in Gabon
People in Gabon follow many different religions. About 43.5% are Roman Catholic, 36% are Protestant or other Christians, 10% are Muslim, and 3.3% practice animist beliefs. Another 6% have other religions, and 1.2% do not follow any specific religion.
The main language spoken in Gabon is French, which became official during colonial times. Other languages spoken there include Fang, Myene, the Teke group, Punu, and Njebi.
Recent studies show that many younger people in cities now grow up speaking French as their first language. This happens because families with parents from different ethnic groups often use French at home so everyone can understand each other better. As a result, children learn French before they even start school, and some may not learn the traditional Gabonese languages at all. This change is also linked to how cities are growing and people from different backgrounds meet and interact more often.
