Population

Guinea's total population, from 1961 to 2003. Guinea's population came close to tripling in forty years.

According to the 2022 revision of the World Population Prospects, the total population was 13,531,906 in 2021, compared to only 3,094,000 in 1950. In 2010, 42.9% of the population was children under 15 years old, 53.8% was between 15 and 65 years old, and 3.3% was 65 years or older.

Ethnic groups

Guinea is home to many different groups of people. One of the largest groups is the Fulɓe, also known as Peuhl or Peul in French and Fula or Fulani in English. They mainly live in the mountainous area called Fouta Djallon. Another big group is the Maninka, called Malinke in French and Mandingo in English, who live mostly in the grassy areas of Upper Guinea and the Forest region. The Susus or Soussous are another group, often found along the coast, including the capital city, Conakry, though not everyone in Guinea speaks their language.

There are also several smaller groups, such as the Gerzé or Kpelle, Toma, and Kissis, who live in the forest region. Along the coast, you’ll find the Bagas, including the Landoumas and Koniaguis. In 2018, it was estimated that the Fulani made up about 33.4% of the population, the Malinke about 29.4%, the Soussou about 21.2%, the Guerze about 7.8%, the Kissi about 6.2%, the Toma about 1.6%, and about 4% were from other groups or did not answer.

Languages

French is the official language of Guinea, but each ethnic group speaks its own language as well. Some languages, like Susu and Maninka, use a special writing system called the N'Ko script that is becoming more common in everyday use for the Maninka language.

Religion

Guinea is a country where most people follow Islam, particularly the Sunni tradition. A smaller number of people practice Christianity, including Catholicism, or follow traditional ethnic religions. There are also a few people who follow other religions or have no religious beliefs at all. The majority of the population is Muslim, with Christians and followers of traditional beliefs making up much of the rest.
