Ethnic groups
New Caledonia is home to many different groups of people. In 2019, about 41.2% of the people were Melanesians known as Kanak. Another 24.1% were Europeans, including groups called Caldoche and Zoreille. The South Province has the most Europeans, while the other two provinces have more Kanak people.
Other groups include Wallis and Futunan people (8.3%), Tahitian people (2.0%), Indonesians (1.4%), Ni-Vanuatu (0.9%), Vietnamese and other Asian people (0.4%), people of Mixed backgrounds (11.3%), and others (9.5%). There were also about 15,000 people of Algerian descent.

Languages
New Caledonia has French as its official language. There are also about 33 different Melanesian and Polynesian dialects spoken there.
Religion
Different groups of people in New Caledonia believe in various things, according to a study from 2012. Most people, about 85%, believe in Christianity. Some people, around 10%, do not follow any particular religion. Smaller groups include those who follow Islam, Buddhism, folk religions, and other beliefs.
