The Dyckman House, now called the Dyckman Farmhouse Museum, is the oldest remaining farmhouse on Manhattan island. It shows us what New York City looked like a long time ago when it was still very rural. This special building was built by a man named William Dyckman around the year 1785.
Originally, the house was part of a huge farm that covered more than 250 acres. Today, the Dyckman House stands in a small park at the corner of Broadway and 204th Street in the Inwood area of Manhattan. The house is built in a Dutch Colonial style, which means it has a design that comes from the Dutch people who settled in that area long ago. Visiting the Dyckman Farmhouse Museum lets us learn about the history of New York City and life many years ago.
History and description
William Dyckman built the Dyckman House around 1785 to replace an older family home that was destroyed during the American Revolutionary War. The house is made of fieldstone, brick, and white clapboard, with a special roof shape called a gambrel roof. It has beautiful wooden floors and was once part of a large farm.
The house stayed in the Dyckman family for many years before it was almost torn down. In 1915, the family bought it back and began fixing it up. They then gave it to the City of New York, which turned it into a museum showing how people lived in Dutch and Colonial times. The Dyckman House is the oldest remaining farmhouse in Manhattan and has been important to history since 1967. It was restored again in 2003 and reopened to visitors in 2005.
