Etruscan religion
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
Etruscan religion was the set of beliefs and practices of the Etruscan civilization. The Etruscans believed in many gods and goddesses, and their way of worship was special and not exactly like that of the Greeks or Romans, even though they shared some similarities. We do not have many written records of their religious texts, except for one called the Liber Linteus, so we learn about their religion mostly by studying things that archaeologists have found.
The Etruscans had people whose job was to lead religious ceremonies, and they performed many rituals. These included making offerings to the gods, looking for signs from the future through divination, and holding special ceremonies for people who had passed away. As time went on, the Etruscan people were slowly included into the Roman Republic starting around the 4th century BC. Many of their beliefs and stories about the gods were then added to the culture of ancient Rome, which often took in the customs of other groups. The earliest signs of Etruscan religion can be found in what is called the Villanovan culture.
History
The earliest signs of Etruscan religious practices come from the Villanovan period. Archaeologists have found clues from places that grew into big holy sites, like the Pian d'Civita shrine in Tarquinia from the 9th century BCE and the Piazza d'Armi in Veii. Many graveyards from this time show how people were buried, often with special items placed with them.
Later, around the 6th century BCE, Etruscan holy places became more grand, with large temples and important gifts left for the gods. There is evidence of animal sacrifices and other special ceremonies.
During this time, Greek people who lived and traded near the Etruscans shared their stories and gods. For example, the Greek hero Heracles, known as Hercle to the Etruscans, may have been part of both cultures' tales. Some stories say he helped settle lands in the west. The Greek hero Odysseus might also have been linked to Etruscan history, but we do not know for sure.
After the Etruscans were defeated by the Romans in the Roman–Etruscan Wars, their culture slowly mixed with Roman ways. The Romans kept some Etruscan religious ideas, especially those told by special Roman advisors called haruspices and families who said they came from the Etruscans. But as time went on, these beliefs were less important and even made fun of by some Romans.
