Fantasy basketball
Adapted from Wikipedia ยท Discoverer experience
Fantasy basketball is a fun game where people act like they are team owners and managers in a virtual basketball world. Players start by choosing their team members in a draft, picking from all the great basketball stars in the National Basketball Association (NBA). After the draft, each week players earn points based on how real basketball players did in actual games.
This game is usually played using NBA players, but sometimes people also include players from the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) or college teams in the NCAA. It lets fans enjoy following the sport even more by making choices about their favorite players and seeing how well their team does each week.
History
After the success of early fantasy leagues like Rotisserie League Baseball, people started applying the same idea to other sports, including basketball. This became more popular because the Internet made it easier to find and use sports statistics.
In 2014, the NBA supported a company called FanDuel that offered daily fantasy sports. Later, a big court decision in 2018 made it clearer that these games were allowed in many places in the United States. By August 2022, FanDuel offered daily fantasy basketball in 44 states. In the 2021/2022 NBA Fantasy season, a player named Henry Murray achieved a special first victory, which is still remembered by fans.
League types
Fantasy basketball can be played in different ways. In rotisserie leagues, teams are ranked by how well they do in certain stats like points, rebounds, and assists. The team with the best overall stats wins. In head-to-head leagues, teams compete against each other each week. The team that scores the most points during the week wins that matchup.
There are different ways to score in head-to-head leagues. One way is to award points for winning the most categories, like scoring the most points or getting the most rebounds. Another way is to give a win for each category a team wins, like having the most assists. Teams can also just add up all the points their players earn during the week to see who wins.
Daily fantasy basketball
Daily fantasy basketball is a fun game similar to regular fantasy basketball. Players pick a team of NBA players who earn points based on real-life performance, but instead of keeping the same team all season, contests only last one day. Websites offer tips and tools to help players build their teams, and some of these sites are free while others charge money. Some contests mix daily play with traditional season-long rules to give players new ways to enjoy the game.
Draft
Before each season, fantasy basketball leagues have a draft. During the draft, each team picks players from the NBA to add to their roster. Players stay with the team that picked them unless they are traded or dropped, which means they become available for any team to claim.
The order of picking can be random or based on the previous season's results, with the team that did worst getting the first pick. Some drafts use a "snake" method, where the first picker in odd rounds picks last in even rounds to keep things fair.
In an auction draft, each team has a pretend budget to "buy" players. Owners take turns suggesting players, and the highest bidder gets the player, spending part of their budget.
Drafts can happen in real time, where owners pick themselves, or can be done automatically by a computer using pre-set rankings. Most drafts happen online, but some are done in person. When picking players, owners try to choose the best ones by looking at predictions and rankings from experts.
Team rosters
In a standard fantasy basketball league with 12 teams, each team manager usually picks 13 players for their roster. The players are chosen for different positions on the basketball court, such as point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward, and center. There are also extra spots for guards, forwards, and utility players, plus some bench spots for extra players.
Some leagues have a special spot called the Injury Reserve (IR) for players who get hurt and can't play for a long time. This adds one more player to the roster, making it 14 players total. Some leagues also have rules about how many players you can pick for each position, so that every team has a fair chance to get the players they want.
Demographics
Many people enjoy playing fantasy sports, where they act like team managers. In 2022, about 62.5 million people in the US and Canada played fantasy sports. Basketball is very popular in these games, being the second most liked sport after football. Most players are young adults, and many have finished college.
