Fidesz–KDNP

Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience

The Fidesz–KDNP Party Alliance is a group of two political parties in Hungary called the Fidesz – Hungarian Civic Alliance and the Christian Democratic People's Party. They work together in elections and have shared similar beliefs, especially those connected to the Catholic Church in Hungary.

Since the 2006 Hungarian parliamentary election, these two parties have run together in every national election. From 2010 until 2026, they were in charge of running the country and had more votes than needed to make big decisions easily in each election from 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022. However, they lost a big election in 2026.

People have described this alliance as having strong control over the country and not liking ideas that many other countries support.

History

The two parties, Fidesz and KDNP, joined together permanently on December 10, 2005. After the 2006 election, they worked separately in the Hungarian parliament but later formed a team there. Many people think KDNP depends on Fidesz because KDNP couldn’t win enough votes to join the parliament on its own since 1994.

In March 2021, Fidesz left a group in the European Parliament called the European People’s Party, but KDNP stayed. Later, in June 2024, KDNP also left that group after another party joined. Fidesz then started a new group called Patriots for Europe. There is also a party for the Romani community called Lungo Drom that has worked with Fidesz–KDNP since 2001.
