Figure skating at the 1920 Summer Olympics
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
Three figure skating events were held at the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp. These events took place in April 1920, which was four months before most of the other Olympic events at the 1920 Games. The competition happened at the Ice Palace of Antwerp.
Gillis Grafström from Sweden won the gold medal in the men's single event. This was the first of three gold medals he would win in a row at the Olympics. Theresa Weld from North America won a bronze medal in the ladies' single event, making her the first skater from North America to win an Olympic medal. Another famous skater, Ulrich Salchow, who had won gold in 1908, came in fourth place.
In the women's singles, Magda Julin from Sweden won the gold medal even though she did not get any first-place votes from the judges. She did very well in other judges' scores and was three months pregnant at the time. Phyllis Johnson from the UK won a bronze medal, having previously won a silver medal at the 1908 Olympics with a different partner. Martin Stixrud, who won bronze in the men's event, was the oldest man to ever win an Olympic medal in an individual winter event at the age of 44.
