Five-a-side football

Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience

Kids can enjoy playing indoor soccer, just like this team in Singapore!

Five-a-side football is a fun and fast-paced version of the game we all know as football. Instead of the usual eleven players on each team, each side has only five players: four outfield players and one goalkeeper. This makes the game quicker and more exciting, as everyone gets to play more often.

The pitch, or playing field, for five-a-side football is smaller than a regular football field, and the goals are also smaller. This helps keep the game fast and action-packed. Matches can be played both indoors and outdoors, often on special artificial grass pitches that are sometimes enclosed, like in a big hall.

There are many different kinds of five-a-side football, each with its own special rules and size of pitch. Some of these include futsal, indoor soccer, jorkyball, beach soccer, cageball, as well as six-a-side and seven-a-side football. These variations make the sport exciting and adaptable for all kinds of places and weather!

History

Five-a-side football likely started in the early 1900s, especially in South America. At that time, football players often had other jobs when they weren't playing, so they made up informal games with fewer players, leading to the five-a-side format. The game spread to Europe in the middle of the 20th century when South American players went there to play professionally. It became very popular in Europe, and the first official five-a-side tournament was held in 1965.

Rules

Traditional (Interchangeable) pitch between Futsal and Five-a-Side

In five-a-side football, the penalty area looks different from regular football. It is often shaped like a half-circle, and only the goalkeeper can touch the ball inside it. The goalkeeper can only throw the ball to another player and can only use their feet to stop the ball, not to pass it. There are no rules about offside positions. Players can head the ball, but the ball cannot be passed or shot higher than the tallest player's head. If this happens, the other team gets a free kick.

Players must wear shin guards, but referees decide if they will check for this. Metal cleats are not allowed indoors to protect the playing surface. Yellow cards mean a player must sit out for a little while, and red cards mean a player has to leave the game. Some rules can be decided just before playing starts, making the game more flexible. The English FA has official rules for five-a-side football, but many games are played more informally.

Fitness and conditioning

Five-a-side football requires quick sprints, fast changes in direction, and constant movement with little rest. Players often practice speed drills, short bursts of activity, and warm-ups to get ready for the fast-paced game. Training for this type of football focuses on quick reactions, good control of the ball, and understanding the game's strategies.

Variations

Futsal

Main article: Futsal

Futsal is a kind of indoor five-a-side football that started in South America. It is often seen as a more official type of five-a-side football. There are two groups that help run the game: the Asociación Mundial de Futsal (AMF) and the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). Many of its rules are similar to five-a-side football.

Indoor soccer is a version played mostly in North America. Teams usually have six players, and the game is played on an ice hockey-sized field.

Jorkyball

Jorkyball is a game where two players play football inside a glass box that is 10 meters by 5 meters. Players can use the walls to pass and score goals. The Jorkyball International Federation is in charge of the sport.

OmegaBall

Main article: Omegaball

OmegaBall is a game with three teams of five players each, all playing at the same time on a round field. A team scores by moving the ball through one of the other team's goals. This game was created in the United States.

Six-a-side football

Main article: International Socca Federation

This version uses a bigger field and more players. Each team has five outfield players and one goalkeeper on the field at the same time. The rules are mostly the same as five-a-side football.

Seven-a-side football

Main article: Seven-a-side football

This version uses an even bigger field and more players, with six outfield players and one goalkeeper for each team. The rules are different from five-a-side football.

SUB football

SUB football is a version of seven-a-side football mostly played in Australia and New Zealand. The rules are changed a bit to make it easier for new players. Players cannot touch opponents, and there are two ways to score: by scoring a goal like in other versions, or by hitting a board next to the goal. A goal is worth 3 points and a board is worth 1 point. When the ball goes out of play, it can be kicked or thrown back in.

Key differences

Five-a-side football is a quick and easy version of the game played on a smaller area with fewer players. It focuses on fast reactions, controlling the ball alone, and being agile. In contrast, 11-a-side football is more organized, needing more teamwork, long passes, and plans across a bigger field. While five-a-side is more relaxed and fun, 11-a-side is more challenging for those who want to learn tactics and grow as players. Both ways help players improve their skills, and many find it useful to practice both to get better overall.

Different organisations

Many places in Europe and especially the UK have five-a-side football games. There are groups like the World Minifootball Federation that bring together teams from many countries. They organize fun competitions.

Other groups, like the International Socca Federation, hold big world cups for a similar style of football. The F5WC was a big tournament for five-a-side football with teams from many nations, but it hasn’t happened for a few years. There are also groups for seven-a-side football, like IFA7, which held a world cup in Guatemala where Russia won.

Youth organisations

Five-a-side football has become very popular among young people in the US. Schools and clubs use this shorter version of football to help kids stay healthy and practice skills without needing large fields. Two big groups that support this are the American Youth Soccer Organization and the United States Youth Soccer Association.
