Florence and the Machine (stylised as Florence + the Machine) are an English indie rock band formed in London in 2007 by lead vocalist Florence Welch and her friends. The band's music is known for its dramatic style and Welch's powerful voice, mixing many genres such as alternative rock, baroque pop and soul.

Their first album, Lungs, became very popular. It reached number two on the UK Albums Chart and later became number one. The band's second album, Ceremonials, went straight to number one in the UK and did well in the US too.

Their third album, How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful, reached number one in the UK and the US Billboard 200. In 2015, the band headlined the Glastonbury Festival, a big achievement for Welch as the first British female headliner of the 21st century.

Florence and the Machine began by playing small shows around London. In 2008, they played at big music festivals like Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds, and Bestival. The BBC helped them become popular by featuring them on BBC Introducing. They also played concerts for charity and supported famous bands like Blur and Duran Duran.
