The first temple in Nagasaki was Kofukuji, built in 1623 by traders from Jiangsu and Zhejiang in China. Then, Fukusai-ji was founded in 1628 by members of the Nagasaki Chinese community.

The temple was destroyed during the atomic bombing of Nagasaki in 1945. It was rebuilt in 1979, and now includes a tall statue of Kannon, a kind and caring figure in Buddhist stories.
