GO Transit
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
GO Transit (pronounced "go") is a regional public transit system serving the Greater Toronto Area and the Greater Golden Horseshoe region of Ontario, Canada. With its hub at Union Station in Toronto, GO Transit's green-and-white trains and buses serve a population of more than seven million across an area over 11,000 square kilometres (4,200 sq mi), stretching from Kitchener in the west to Peterborough in the east, and from Barrie in the north to Niagara Falls in the south.
GO Transit began regular passenger service on May 23, 1967, as a part of the Ontario Ministry of Transportation. Since then, it has grown from a single train line to seven commuter rail lines. Today, it is an operating division of Metrolinx, a provincial Crown agency with overall responsibility for integrative transportation planning within the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. GO Transit operates diesel-powered double-decker trains and coach buses on routes that connect with all local and some long-distance inter-city transit services in its service area.
In 2025, the system had a ridership of 79,165,600. It is projected to grow dramatically with electrification, increased frequency, and new stations through the GO Expansion, which is scheduled to be completed in phases through 2025–2032.
History
Main article: History of GO Transit
Cities around the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area grew a lot in the 1950s because more people were moving there and industries were expanding. Back then, most train services were run by the Canadian National Railway, but they didn’t have enough money or resources to add more trains. The idea for GO Transit began in 1962 when people were worried about how to plan for the future. In 1965, the government of Ontario allowed them to start Canada’s first special commuter train service, costing CA$9.2 million.
GO Transit began as a test in 1967, using trains pulled by diesel engines on one track along Lake Ontario. It quickly became very popular, with the first million passengers in just four months. Over the years, more train lines were added, like the Kitchener line in 1974 and the Richmond Hill line in 1978. In 1978, new double-decker trains were introduced to carry more people, made with help from Bombardier Transportation. Bus services started in 1970 and grew into a full network by 1989.
In the 1990s, some service cuts happened, but service returned and grew in the 2000s. Big plans were made to improve and expand GO Transit, including adding more trains and new stations. Today, GO Transit is part of Metrolinx, which plans to make trains run more often and reach more places. Improvements are also happening at Union Station, Canada’s busiest train station. GO Transit is growing to serve even more people in the future.
Service
GO Transit is a public transportation system that serves the Greater Toronto Area and the Greater Golden Horseshoe region in Ontario, Canada. It helps millions of people travel every day using trains and buses.
The system has its main station at Union Station in Toronto and covers a large area. Trains and buses go to many cities and towns around Toronto, stretching from Kitchener in the west to Peterborough in the east, and from Barrie in the north to Niagara Falls in the south. In 2025, almost 80 million people used GO Transit.
GO Transit has seven train lines that start from Union Station and go to different places. These lines are named after where they end, like Lakeshore West to Hamilton and Niagara Falls, or Barrie to the city of Barrie. The trains run at different times depending on the line. Some lines have trains every hour, while others only run during busy times of the day.
Besides trains, GO Transit also runs many bus routes. These buses help connect places that trains don’t go to, or they run when trains are not operating. Some buses even go to airports and universities. Most train stations also have bus stops, making it easy to switch between trains and buses.

Fares
Fares on GO Transit depend on where you are going and who is traveling. You can buy tickets for one trip, one day, or one month. These tickets work on trains, buses, or both. You can buy them at stations, terminals, or ticket offices. There are special rates for adults, youth, students, and seniors. Since March 1, 2025, kids 12 and under, members of the Canadian Armed Forces, and veterans can ride for free.
You can use a Presto card to pay for rides. This special card works on all GO trains and buses, and also on many local buses in the area. The card can be loaded with money, and you just tap it when you get on and off the train or bus. The fare is taken from the card each time you travel. The card can also be linked to a credit or debit card to add money automatically.
Since August 11, 2022, you can also use contactless credit or debit cards, like Visa or MasterCard, to pay by tapping them on the card readers. This works the same way as using the Presto card. Passengers need to have a valid ticket, pass, or card to show they paid their fare, and sometimes staff will check to make sure everyone has paid.
Logo
The GO Transit logo has stayed mostly the same since it was first created. A design firm in Montreal made the logo, using the letters "GO" for the Government of Ontario inside two circles with a T in the middle. The logo is well-known in Toronto and is used on trains, buses, and more.
In 2013, the logo and its colours were updated. The main colour changed to a darker green, with a lighter green added to match other transportation brands and look better on digital screens.
Safety and security
GO Transit has rules and regulations to keep passengers and employees safe. These rules cover things like staying in safe areas, paying fares, and proper behavior. Special staff, called Transit Safety Officers, help enforce these rules and keep everyone safe. They work with local police and can help with any problems.
There have been some accidents in the past. In 1975, a GO train hit a bus, and many people were hurt. In 1997, two trains crashed, and some people were injured. In 2013, a train got stuck in heavy rain and needed to be saved. In 2015, a GO bus had an accident, and one person was hurt badly. In 2026, a train almost had a serious problem but was stopped just in time. Another time in 2026, part of a train came off the tracks, causing delays. These incidents show why safety rules and careful training are important for everyone who rides GO Transit.
