Harm

Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience

Harm is an important idea in both moral and legal thinking. It means something that is bad or wrong according to certain rules or beliefs. When something causes harm, we call it harmful. If it does not cause harm, we say it is harmless.

There are many ways people think about harm. It can mean doing something that hurts others, breaking rules, or acting in ways that are not right. Understanding harm helps us know what behaviors are acceptable and what we should avoid to keep everyone safe and happy.

Different places and cultures might have slightly different ideas about what counts as harm, but most agree that causing pain, danger, or sadness to others is wrong. Learning about harm helps us make better choices and respect the well-being of people around us.

Philosophical construction

The idea of harm, or "evil," has been studied by philosophers who describe it as things like pain, death, disability, or loss of freedom. Some thinkers see harm as anything that gets in the way of a person's goals or well-being.

There are two main ways people think about what matters to us. One is about staying healthy, feeling good, and having a safe and supportive life. The other is about big dreams like creating art, solving big problems, or having a successful career. Many philosophers say it is important to avoid causing harm and to be careful in our choices and how we treat others. In medicine, there is a well-known rule: "do no harm," which means doctors should first make sure they do not cause any hurt when helping someone.

Medical classifications

In the UK, harm is grouped into three levels in medicine: severe, moderate, and mild. Severe harm can lead to lasting problems, while moderate and mild harm usually gets better over time. Doctors have special rules to follow when reporting moderate and severe harm, as well as when someone feels very upset for a long time.

Harm reduction

Harm reduction, also called harm minimization, is about helping people live safer lives. It includes special ideas and rules made to make life better for everyone, even if they keep doing things that might be risky. This way, people can still improve their health and help others around them.

Most of the time, harm reduction is used to help people who use drugs. Countries all over the world have programs to support this. These programs aim to keep people healthy by stopping the spread of diseases that can happen when people share tools that aren’t clean.
