Highmark

Highmark Inc is an American nonprofit healthcare company based in Pittsburgh. It is one of the larger individual health insurers in the United States. The company works as an integrated delivery network, which means it helps connect people with healthcare services. Highmark operates through several different businesses, some of which are nonprofit and others that are for-profit. This setup allows Highmark to offer a range of health insurance options to meet different needs.

Locality

Highmark is a health insurer in Pennsylvania. In 1996, it also became an insurer in West Virginia and later in Delaware. As Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, it mainly works in 29 counties in western Pennsylvania. As Highmark Blue Shield, it serves 21 counties in central Pennsylvania and the Lehigh Valley. It also operates in parts of eastern Ohio and all of West Virginia through its subsidiary, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield West Virginia.

In June 2015, Highmark took over Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania, known as BCNEPA.

Company history

Highmark was created in 1977 when two Pennsylvania groups joined together. These groups were Pennsylvania Blue Shield, based near Harrisburg, and Blue Cross of Western Pennsylvania, based in Pittsburgh. The new company set up its main office in downtown Pittsburgh.

In 2011, Highmark bought a health system that included several hospitals. This caused some disagreements with another health group, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. In 2020, Highmark was honored for being a great place to work for everyone, no matter who they are.

In 2021, Highmark took over a health insurance group in Western New York. In 2026, a football stadium for the Buffalo Bills will be named Highmark Stadium.

Organizational structure

Highmark Inc. owns several companies that help with different health services. These include United Concordia Companies, which handles dental insurance, Davis Vision for vision care, and HM Insurance Group, which offers various insurance services.

Highmark also includes several health plans and hospitals, such as Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield in different areas of Pennsylvania and West Virginia, and the Allegheny Health Network, which has many hospitals across several states. Additionally, Highmark has other businesses like dental services, insurance, IT services, and community health support. In 2019, Highmark sold Visionworks of America to VSP Global.
