Most Christian denominations believe the Holy Spirit, or Holy Ghost, is the third divine Person of the Trinity, a special way of thinking about God. The Trinity is the idea that there is one God who shows up in three ways: as God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Not all Christians agree with this idea, and some have different thoughts about the Holy Spirit.

In the New Testament, the Holy Spirit is very important and close to Jesus. It is said that Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit when he was born and when he was baptised. Before Jesus left his friends, he promised to send the Holy Spirit to help them.

The Holy Spirit is also important in how Christians think about faith and prayer. Many Christians celebrate a special event called Pentecost, which happens fifty days after the time they believe Jesus came back to life. This celebration marks the time when the Holy Spirit came to the early followers of Jesus in a powerful way.

Etymology and usage

The Greek word pneûma is used many times in the New Testament to talk about the Holy Spirit. It means "spirit" or "spiritual" and sometimes just "wind" or "life." In old English, people used the word "Holy Ghost," but today most translations say "Holy Spirit."

Both names come from ideas about breath and life. The older English word "ghost" used to mean something alive, but now it usually means a spirit of a person who has passed away. That's why many modern translations use "Holy Spirit" instead.

Names

The Holy Spirit has many names in the Bible. In the Hebrew Bible, it is called "His Holy Spirit," "Your Holy Spirit," "Spirit of God," and other special titles. In the New Testament, it is called "Holy Spirit," "Spirit of God," "The Comforter," and "Spirit of Truth." Depending on the situation, it can also simply be called "Spirit."

Biblical portrayal

Old Testament

In the Hebrew Bible, the "Spirit of God" is also called the "Holy Spirit." This idea appears in books like Psalms and Isaiah. The Holy Spirit was seen as a special force from God that helped create the world and gave people the ability to tell the future, called prophecy. People believed the Holy Spirit was like wind or breath from God.

New Testament

The New Testament talks about the Holy Spirit more than 90 times. It is very important to Christians. The Holy Spirit is part of the Trinity, along with God the Father and Jesus. The Holy Spirit helps guide and empower people.

The Holy Spirit is mentioned in the stories of Jesus' life, even before he was born. It came upon Jesus when he was baptized, and it gave him strength during difficult times. After Jesus rose from the dead, he promised to send the Holy Spirit to his followers to help them.

The book of Acts shows how the Holy Spirit helped the early Christians. It gave them courage and power to share their beliefs with others. The Holy Spirit was also important in the letters written by the apostle Paul, where it is described as a gift from God that helps Christians live in a way that honors Jesus.

Mainstream doctrines

The study of spirits in Christianity is called pneumatology. Many Christians believe the Holy Spirit is called the Lord and Giver of Life. They think the Holy Spirit was with us before the universe began and helped create everything through the power of Jesus Christ and God the Father. Special Christian songs, like "Veni Creator Spiritus," show this belief.

For most Christian groups, the Holy Spirit is one part of the Holy Trinity — God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. All three are the same God. The Holy Spirit comes from the Father, and some Christians also believe the Holy Spirit comes from the Son. The Holy Spirit helped Jesus be born to the Virgin Mary and appeared like a dove when Jesus was baptized. The Holy Spirit helps people understand important teachings and gives them good qualities.

The "fruit of the Holy Spirit" are good qualities that the Holy Spirit helps people develop, like love, joy, and peace. These are different from special abilities, called the "gifts of the Holy Spirit," which some Christians believe are given to help others. Different Christian groups have different ideas about these gifts. Some believe everyone has these gifts at baptism, while others think people need a special experience to receive them.

Denominational variations

Christian groups have different ideas about the Holy Spirit. One big discussion is about the Filioque. This is about whether the Holy Spirit comes only from God the Father or also from God the Son. This difference is important between many Western Churches and Eastern Christian groups like the Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and Church of the East.

Most Protestant groups think about the Holy Spirit in ways that are similar to the Roman Catholic Church, but there are some differences. For example, Pentecostalism focuses on a special experience called “Baptism with the Spirit.” Another group, the Charismatic movement, talks a lot about special gifts like healing and prophecy.

Some groups, like Jehovah's Witnesses and Christadelphians, do not see the Holy Spirit as a separate person. Instead, they think of it as God’s power or force that he uses to do things.

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe the Holy Ghost is the third member of the Godhead. They think the Holy Ghost is a spirit without a physical body and works under the direction of God the Father and Jesus Christ.

Symbolism and art

The Holy Spirit is often shown through different symbols and pictures. These symbols help us understand what the Holy Spirit does. Some important symbols include:

  • Water – This shows the Holy Spirit’s role in Baptism. It reminds us that believers are joined together through the Spirit.
  • Anointing – This means being blessed with oil and shows the Holy Spirit’s presence. It is linked to Jesus, who was called “the Anointed One” because of the Spirit.
  • Fire – This represents the powerful work of the Holy Spirit. It appeared as tongues of fire when the Spirit came to Jesus’ followers.
  • Cloud and light – The Spirit was present when Jesus was chosen and when he appeared to his followers on a mountain.
  • The dove – The Holy Spirit appeared as a dove when Jesus was baptized. It also reminds us of peace, like the dove that brought an olive branch to Noah.
  • Wind – The Spirit is like wind that can go anywhere, showing its powerful and moving nature.

Artists have shown the Holy Spirit in many ways, often as a dove, a flame, or even a ray of light. In buildings and paintings, these symbols help remind people of the Spirit’s presence and work. The Holy Spirit has also appeared in books and stories that explore Christian beliefs.
