The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited (HSH) is a company based in Hong Kong that owns and manages many famous hotels and properties around the world. Its most well-known hotels are part of The Peninsula Hotels group, found in exciting cities across Asia, the United States, and Europe. In addition to hotels, HSH also owns commercial and residential buildings and offers many services related to travel, leisure, and clubs.
One of the biggest shareholders of HSH is Michael Kadoorie, who owns 47% of the company's shares. This means he plays an important role in guiding the company's decisions and growth. HSH has built a strong reputation over the years for providing high-quality accommodations and services to guests from all over the world.
History
The company began in 1866 as The Hongkong Hotel Company Limited, owning the Hongkong Hotel, which opened in 1868. Later, the Kadoorie family bought the company in the 1890s. In 1922, it merged with the Shanghai Hotel and took the name Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels the next year.
It was among the first companies in Hong Kong to list on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong. In 2007, the Hong Kong Heritage Project started to collect and share historical materials from the company, CLP Holdings, and the Kadoorie family. This archive includes audio, visual, and documentary records of the company's activities from the 19th and 20th centuries.
Ownership
The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited is mostly owned by the Kadoorie family. Members of this family have led the company since 1937. Elly Kadoorie was the first chairman, followed by Lawrence Kadoorie, Horace Kadoorie, and currently Michael Kadoorie.

Other properties
The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels group also owns several other places. These include Peak Tower and Peak Tram in Hong Kong, as well as The Repulse Bay and St. John's Building, also in Hong Kong. They also own Quail Lodge Golf Club in Carmel, California.
