Houston Forward Times
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
The Houston Forward Times is a weekly newspaper based in Houston, Texas. It is one of the largest black-owned newspapers in the city and has been an important voice for the local Black community. The newspaper was started by Julius Carter in 1960 because he wanted to share news that mattered most to Black readers, rather than just general stories from bigger papers.
After Julius Carter passed away in 1971, his wife Lenora Carter took over and kept the newspaper going. She published and edited it until her death in 2010. Today, the newspaper is led by Karen Carter Richards, Julius and Lenora’s daughter. The paper also runs a scholarship foundation to help students in the Houston Metropolitan area pay for school.
In 2015, the Houston Forward Times celebrated 55 years of sharing important news and supporting the community. It remains one of the few newspapers that still prints its own copies, showing its commitment to staying independent and close to the people it serves.
