The men's ice hockey tournament at the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, was the eighth Olympic Championship. It also counted as the 23rd World Championships and the 34th European Championships. The games took place at the Olympic Ice Stadium and the Apollonio Stadium.

Trophy awarded for the 1956 World Championships

The Soviet Union won all their games, taking home their first Olympic title, along with their second World title and third European title. Canada, represented by the Kitchener-Waterloo Dutchmen, earned its eighth straight Olympic ice hockey medal, this time a bronze.

Because East Germany and West Germany could not agree on forming a single team, they played a special game to decide who would compete. West Germany won that game. East Germany later hosted a separate tournament for teams that did not qualify, which included the GDR, Norway, and Belgium in Berlin.
