Tiebreak criteria

In each group, teams were ranked by how many points they earned. Teams got points like this: three for a win in regular time, two for a win in overtime or shootout, one for a loss in overtime or shootout, and zero for a loss in regular time.

If two teams had the same number of points, the result of their game against each other decided who was higher. If three or four teams had the same points, more rules were used to decide the ranking. These rules looked at points from games between the tied teams, goal differences in those games, goals scored, and the 2021 IIHF World Ranking.
