Road signs marking the border between New York and Connecticut along Interstate 684.

Interstate 684, often called I-684, is a 28.53-mile highway located in the state of New York in the United States, with a very short part in Connecticut. This highway links I-84 to I-287 and the Hutchinson River Parkway. It mainly helps people who live in the northern suburbs travel to and from the big city areas around New York.

Most of I-684 runs through northern Westchester County. Before it became I-684, the road was part of I-87 from 1968 to 1970. The first part of the highway opened for drivers in October 1968, and the last part was finished in December 1974. This highway is very important for people who commute, or travel to work, every day.

Route description

Northward, I-684 starts as two separate roads. The main road, called I-684, begins at the White PlainsHarrison line at exit 9A of the Cross Westchester Expressway (I-287) in Westchester County, New York. The other road, called New York State Route 984J but signed as I-684 northbound, starts in Harrison. These roads meet and continue north through wooded areas, passing lakes and airports.

Signs at Connecticut state line

After crossing into Connecticut briefly, I-684 reenters New York and continues north past towns and parks. It ends at I-84, connecting to places like Danbury, Connecticut and Newburgh.

History

I-684 wends between Muscoot Reservoir (top left) to its west and Cross River Reservoir to its east near Katonah, New York. Byram Lake Reservoir just west of I-684 at bottom. (Aerial photo, 2013).

An expressway along the NY 22 corridor between White Plains and Brewster was planned by Westchester County in 1956. In 1961, the planned route for I-87 was changed to use the NY 22 corridor instead. After approval in 1964, construction began and the first part of the road opened in 1968. The last part of the road was finished in 1974.
