The Israel Prize (Hebrew: פרס ישראל; pras israél) is an award given by the State of Israel. It is considered the country's highest honor for culture and achievement. Each year, the Israel Prize is awarded in many different fields, such as literature, music, science, and more. It recognizes people who have made big contributions to their areas and to Israeli society. Winning the Israel Prize is a great way to show respect and appreciation for these important achievements.

History

Minister of Education Yigal Allon opens the Israel Prize award ceremony on Independence Day 1971, in the presence of President Zalman Shazar and Prime Minister Golda Meir

Before the Israel Prize, the most important award for art was the Dizengoff Prize, and for literature, the Bialik Prize. These prizes were given out every year by the city of Tel Aviv starting in the 1930s.

The Israel Prize is given out each year on Israeli Independence Day during a special ceremony in Jerusalem. Important leaders such as the president, the prime minister, the speaker of the Knesset, and the president of the Supreme Court attend. The prize began in 1953 because of an idea by the Minister of Education, Ben-Zion Dinor, who later won the prize himself in 1958 and 1973.

Awarding the prize

The Israel Prize is given in four main areas. These areas change a little bit every few years, but one area is given out every year. The areas include Humanities, social sciences, and Jewish studies; life and exact sciences; Culture, arts, communication and sports; and Lifetime achievement and special contributions to the nation since 1972.

People who win the Israel Prize are usually from Israel. They are chosen because they have done very good work in their field or have helped a lot to make Israeli culture better. A group of judges picks the winners and sends their choices to the Minister of Education. The prize for winning used to be 75,000 Israeli dollars in 2008.

Recipients

Many famous people have won the Israel Prize, including Martin Buber, Abba Eban, A. B. Yehoshua, Israel Aumann, Golda Meir, Amos Oz, Ephraim Kishon, Naomi Shemer, David Benvenisti, Leah Goldberg (who received it after passing away), and Teddy Kollek. Groups like the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Jewish Agency, Yad Vashem, and Jewish National Fund have also been honored.

Usually, only people who are citizens of Israel can win this prize. But sometimes, it goes to people from other countries who have lived in Israel for many years. For example, Zubin Mehta, who came from India, got a special Israel Prize in 1991 for his work with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra over 50 years.

Controversy

Sometimes, people have strong feelings about who should receive the Israel Prize. For example, in 1993, a leader named Yitzhak Rabin did not support giving the prize to someone named Yeshayahu Leibowitz, so Leibowitz decided not to accept it.

In 2015, the prime minister, Benyamin Netanyahu, did not agree with some choices for the Literature prize. This caused many people to leave the selection committees, and some writers decided not to be considered for the prize.

In 2021, a decision to not give the prize for mathematics to someone named Oded Goldreich was changed after a court ruling. Finally, in 2024, there was a plan to change the prize because of events happening that year, but after some people questioned the change, the prize was given as usual.

Venues

The Israel Prize ceremonies are held in special places such as the International Convention Center and the Jerusalem Theatre. These venues are important for celebrating the achievements of people who receive this honor.
