Jubilee

A jubilee is a special celebration or commemoration that marks an important anniversary. The word "jubilation," which means joyful celebration, comes from the word "jubilee." The idea of a jubilee started in the Hebrew Bible, where it was a religious observance that happened every certain number of years. During this time, people were freed from debts and slavery.
Later, emperors of ancient Rome also celebrated special anniversaries of their rule, though they did not call these events "jubilees." Today, the term "jubilee" is used in Roman Catholicism to describe special holy years set aside for forgiveness and spiritual renewal. The word entered the English language through Bible translations, and since at least the 1800s, it has been used to describe big celebrations marking important milestones in a monarch's reign.
Religious usage
The idea of a jubilee comes from ancient traditions. In the past, every 50 years, special rules were followed. During these years, land could rest, and people who were unable to freedom could be released. This showed that all land and goods truly belong to a higher power.
In some Christian traditions, a jubilee is a special year set by the church. It happens every 25 or 50 years, and people are encouraged to reflect, seek forgiveness, and receive blessings.

In ancient Rome, emperors celebrated big festivals to mark special years of their rule. They often held a big party every 10 years, called a decennalia. Every 20 years, they celebrated again, called a vicennalia. And sometimes, after 30 years, they had an even bigger celebration called a tricennalia. Today, special anniversaries for kings and queens are often linked to valuable metals and stones. For example:
- Silver jubilee, for a 25th anniversary.
- Ruby jubilee, for a 40th anniversary.
- Golden jubilee, for a 50th anniversary.
- Diamond jubilee, for either a 60th or 75th anniversary.
- Sapphire jubilee, for a 65th anniversary.
- Platinum jubilee, for a 70th anniversary.
