LeBron Raymone James, born December 30, 1984, is an American professional basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Known as "King James," he is the NBA's all-time leading scorer and has won four NBA championships from ten NBA Finals appearances, including eight in a row between 2011 and 2018. He has also won three Olympic gold medals as part of the U.S. national team and is widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball players ever.

James has earned many individual awards, including four NBA MVP awards, four Finals MVP awards, the Rookie of the Year award, and the Olympics MVP in the 2024 Summer Olympics. He is a record 22-time All-Star and has been selected to the All-NBA selection 21 times. Born and raised in Akron, Ohio, James became famous while playing at St. Vincent–St. Mary High School and was chosen as the first overall pick in the 2003 NBA draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

After starting his career with the Cavaliers, James joined the Miami Heat in 2010 and won his first two NBA championships. He later returned to Cleveland, where he helped the team win its first-ever championship. In 2018, he signed with the Lakers, winning another title and becoming the first player to win Finals MVP with three different teams. Off the court, James has become very successful, earning over $1 billion and being named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time multiple times.

Early life

LeBron Raymone James was born on December 30, 1984, in Akron, Ohio. His mom, Gloria Marie James, was only 16 when he was born. His dad, Anthony McClelland, was not part of his life. LeBron's childhood was difficult, and his family often moved to different homes in Akron.

When LeBron was nine, a local coach named Frank Walker introduced him to basketball. LeBron started playing organized basketball in fifth grade and later joined a team called the Northeast Ohio Shooting Stars. He and his friends, Sian Cotton, Dru Joyce III, and Willie McGee, called themselves the "Fab Four" and all went to St. Vincent–St. Mary High School, a private school.

High school career

Basketball

LeBron James started playing basketball in high school and quickly became amazing. In his first year, he scored 18 points on average per game and helped his team, St. Vincent–St. Mary, win the state championship without losing a game. By his second year, he was scoring 25 points per game and again led his team to the state title.

Before his junior year, LeBron was featured in a magazine and appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated, making him very famous. That year, he scored 29 points per game on average and was named the best player in Ohio and the country. His team didn’t win the state championship that year.

In his final year of high school, LeBron played against top teams and scored even more points—31 per game. He won many awards and played in big all-star games. LeBron also faced some problems, like accepting gifts that broke rules, but he still helped his team win the state championship.

Football

Besides basketball, LeBron also played football in high school as a wide receiver. He was good enough that college teams noticed him. He helped his team reach the state semifinals in his third year but didn’t play his final year because of an injury. Some people thought he could have played professional football in the NFL if he had wanted to.

Professional career

Cleveland Cavaliers (2003–2010)

2003–2004: Rookie of the Year

The Cleveland Cavaliers chose LeBron James as the first player in the 2003 NBA draft. He wore jersey number 23 to honor Michael Jordan. In his first game, James scored 25 points, setting a record for the most points by a new player in their first game. By the end of the 2003–04 season, James became the first Cavalier to win the NBA Rookie of the Year Award.

2004–2008: Rise to superstardom

In the 2004–05 season, James was selected for the NBA All-Star Game for the first time. Teams noticed his quick improvement, and he set a new record for points in a single game for the Cavaliers. He signed a big contract to stay with the team. James helped the Cavaliers reach the playoffs for the first time in many years. They won some games but lost in the later rounds.

The Cavaliers did well in the 2006–07 season and reached the playoffs again. James helped them win several games, including a very exciting game where he scored many points. They made it to the NBA Finals but lost to the San Antonio Spurs.

In the 2007–08 season, James passed a former player to become the Cavaliers' top scorer. He led the league in scoring and helped the team win some playoff games before losing to the Boston Celtics.

2008–2010: MVP seasons

In the 2008–2009 season, James helped the Cavaliers have a great season and win many games. They reached the playoffs but lost in the Eastern Conference Finals. James played very well but averaged a lot of points in the playoffs.

In the 2009–10 season, James led the Cavaliers to the best record in the league. They won their early playoff games but lost in the next round. James was criticized for his performance in one game, and the team was eliminated.

Miami Heat (2010–2014)

James decided to leave the Cavaliers and join the Miami Heat in 2010. Many people were upset about his decision, which he announced on a special TV show. He joined two other star players, and some fans and other players were not happy about this. James said he wanted to have a better chance to win a championship with the Heat.

2010–2011: Year of media and fan scrutiny

James signed a big contract with the Heat and changed his jersey number to 6. The team had high hopes, but many people outside Miami were not happy with him. The Heat had a slow start but finished the season strong. They reached the NBA Finals but lost to the Dallas Mavericks. James did not play as well as usual in the Finals.

2011–2013: Back-to-back championships

In the 2011–12 season, James worked on improving his game. The Heat had a good start and faced some challenges during the season. In the playoffs, they faced many tough teams but eventually reached the NBA Finals. James helped the Heat win their second championship and was named the Finals MVP.

The next season, the Heat started very well and had a long winning streak. They reached the Finals again and won, making it back-to-back championships. James was named Finals MVP again.

2013–2014: Final season in Miami

In the 2013–14 season, James scored a lot of points in one game, setting a new personal best. The Heat reached the Finals for the fourth year in a row but lost to the San Antonio Spurs.

Return to Cleveland (2014–2018)

2014–2016: Ending Cleveland's championship drought

James returned to the Cavaliers in 2014. He missed some games due to injuries but helped the team reach the Finals. They lost to the Golden State Warriors but came close.

The next season, the Cavaliers had a great record and reached the Finals again. This time, they came back from behind to win the series and give Cleveland its first championship in many years. James was named Finals MVP.

2016–2018: End of second stint in Cleveland

James stayed with the Cavaliers and had some injuries during the 2016–17 season. They reached the Finals again but lost to the Warriors. James played very well in the series.

In the 2017–18 season, James had some big scoring games and helped the team reach the Finals once more. However, they were swept by the Warriors.

Los Angeles Lakers (2018–present)

2018–2019: Injury and playoff miss

James joined the Los Angeles Lakers in 2018. The team had a slow start but improved. James got injured and missed many games, and the Lakers did not make the playoffs.

2019–2020: Fourth NBA championship

The Lakers made some changes and started the 2019–20 season very well. James helped the team reach the Finals, where they faced the Miami Heat. The Lakers won the championship, and James was named Finals MVP for the fourth time.

2020–2021: Back-to-back chase

James signed a new contract to stay with the Lakers. He had some injuries during the 2020–21 season but helped the team reach the playoffs. They lost in the first round.

2021–2022: First in the 10K-10K-10K club

James changed his jersey number back to 23. He achieved some big milestones, including becoming the only player to reach 10,000 points, 10,000 rebounds, and 10,000 assists. He had some injuries but was named to the All-NBA Team again.

2022–2023: All-time scoring record

James signed a new contract and had many achievements during the 2022–23 season. He passed a legendary player to become the NBA's all-time leading scorer. He had some injuries but helped the Lakers reach the Western Conference finals.

2023–2024: NBA Cup MVP and 40K points

James switched back to jersey number 23 and had a very successful season. He won the NBA Cup MVP and became the first player to reach 40,000 career points.

2024–2025: First father-son duo

James re-signed with the Lakers, and his son Bronny joined the team. They became the first father-son duo to play together in the NBA. James had many big performances and set new records.

2025–2026: 23rd NBA season

James missed the start of the 2025–26 season due to injury but made his debut later. He became the first player to play in 23 NBA seasons and continued to achieve impressive milestones.

National team career

LeBron James first joined the United States national team when he was 19 years old at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece. He didn’t play much during that event, and the team won a bronze medal, which was the first time the U.S. team didn’t win gold since NBA players started joining the Olympics.

James played more at the 2006 FIBA World Championship in Japan and helped the team win another bronze medal. He later became a key player for the team and helped them win gold medals at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, the 2012 Olympics in London, and the 2024 Olympics in Paris. In London, he made history with a special performance called a “triple-double.” In Paris, at age 39, he was one of the flag-bearers for the opening ceremony and helped the team win again, becoming one of only a few players to win three Olympic gold medals.

In 2018, a TV host told James to "shut up and dribble" after he made political comments. James used those words for a documentary he made about athletes and their role in society. In 2020, James and his team chose not to play games to protest unfair treatment of someone named Jacob Blake. They spoke with a former president about their concerns.

Politics

In 2008, LeBron James helped support Barack Obama’s campaign by giving money and organizing a big event to watch one of Obama’s advertisements. Later, he also supported Hillary Clinton in 2016.

In 2017, LeBron spoke out about some things U.S. President Donald Trump said and did. In 2020, he supported Joe Biden’s campaign and encouraged people to vote. In 2024, he also supported Kamala Harris for president.

Personal life

LeBron James married his high school girlfriend, Savannah James, in 2013 in San Diego, California. They have two sons named Bronny and Bryce, and a daughter named Zhuri. In June 2024, Bronny joined the Los Angeles Lakers and played his first game with his dad that October.

LeBron has several close friends in basketball, including Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, and former teammate Dwyane Wade. He is a Christian and often talks about his faith. LeBron enjoys chocolate chip cookies and used to drink wine every night, thinking it was good for his heart.
