Leonardo's fighting vehicle
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
Leonardo da Vinci, a brilliant Italian artist and thinker, imagined many amazing machines long before they were built. One of his ideas was a special fighting vehicle, sometimes called Da Vinci's Tank. This was not a real vehicle that was ever made or used, but an idea Leonardo drew and wrote about in his notebooks.
Leonardo thought of a machine that could move and protect soldiers in battles. He imagined it as a strong, round box with wheels that could go over rough ground. Inside, soldiers could turn wheels and shoot weapons through holes in the sides. Though Leonardo's drawing was very old, many people think it looks like a tank, a type of war machine we know today.
Leonardo's idea shows how smart he was. Even though his fighting vehicle was never built, it gives us a glimpse into the amazing things he dreamed up hundreds of years ago. His work helps us see how old ideas can sometimes lead to new inventions.
Design
Leonardo da Vinci once wrote to Ludovico Sforza, the Duke of Milan, about his idea for special protected wagons. These wagons, with their own firepower, could break through enemy lines and help soldiers move forward safely.
The design, made around 1487 while Leonardo worked for Ludovico Sforza, looked like a turtle's shell, made from wood and metal plates at angles to protect against attacks. It was meant to be moved by people inside using large handles and had small cannons around it. However, the way the parts connected made it very hard to use properly. Some think Leonardo did this on purpose to keep the design safe. Engineers later built a model and fixed the problem, showing how clever Leonardo's ideas were, even if it couldn't work well in real battles back then because of its size and the terrain it could travel on.
