The Chinese made many important discoveries long ago. They were among the first to find and understand things in the human body, the world around us, and even our Solar System. Their discoveries also helped shape ideas in mathematics and music.

Besides inventing many things, the Chinese were pioneers in learning about nature. They studied the world carefully and shared their findings. These discoveries came from China and influenced people for many years.

Their work shows how early thinkers used observation and smart thinking to understand the world. This list highlights some of their key findings that changed how we see and live today.

Discoveries

Han dynasty (202 BC โ€“ 220 AD) paintings on tile of Chinese guardian spirits representing 11 pm to 1 am (left) and 5 am to 7 am (right); the ancient Chinese, although discussing it in supernatural terms, acknowledged circadian rhythm within the human body

The Chinese have a long history of pioneering discoveries in many fields, including mathematics, medicine, music, and more. These discoveries have shaped our understanding of the world in many ways.

Each bronze bell of Marquis Yi of Zeng (433 BC) bears an inscription describing the specific note it plays, its position on a 12-note scale, and how this scale differed from scales used by other Chinese states of the time; before this discovery in 1978, the oldest known surviving Chinese tuning set came from a 3rd-century BC text (which alleges was written by Guan Zhong, d. 645 BC) with five tones and additions or subtractions of โ…“ of successive tone values which produce the rising fourths and falling fifths of Pythagorean tuning.

Some key discoveries include:

Bamboo and rocks by Li Kan (1244โ€“1320); using evidence of fossilized bamboo found in a dry northern climate zone, Shen Kuo hypothesized that climates naturally shifted geographically over time.
  • Catalan numbers: These numbers were used in trigonometric calculations by a Qing dynasty mathematician around 1730.
  • Chinese remainder theorem: This method for solving number problems was first created in the 3rd century AD.
  • Circadian rhythm in humans: Chinese medical texts from the 13th century described patterns in human activity.
  • Decimal fractions: These were used in Chinese mathematics as early as the 1st century AD.
  • Diabetes, recognition and treatment of: Ancient Chinese texts identified diabetes and described its symptoms.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi tends to a leper; the Chinese were the first to describe the symptoms of leprosy.

These discoveries show how ancient Chinese scholars made important contributions to science and knowledge. Their work continues to influence many areas today.
