Memorial Hermann–Texas Medical Center is a hospital located at the Texas Medical Center neighborhood in Houston, Texas. It is part of the Memorial Hermann Health System. Founded in 1925, it was the first hospital built in the Texas Medical Center area.

The hospital works closely with McGovern Medical School, which used to be called The University of Texas Medical School at Houston (UTHealth Medical School). It is the main teaching hospital for the medical school and the main hospital for the Memorial Hermann Healthcare System, which includes 13 hospitals.

Memorial Hermann–Texas Medical Center is one of two certified Level I Trauma Centers in the greater Houston area, meaning it can handle the most serious injuries. It also runs the Memorial Hermann Life Flight air ambulance service, which uses helicopters to quickly take patients to the hospital. For children and teens, care is provided by Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital, which looks after patients from birth to age 21.

Brian Dean became the CEO of Memorial Hermann–Texas Medical Center in 2015. Before that, he worked as the CFO for the same hospital.

Hospitals and Institutes

The Memorial Hermann–Texas Medical Center campus includes the main Texas Medical Center Hospital and Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital. It also has the TIRR Memorial Hermann rehabilitation hospital in the Texas Medical Center. The campus is home to four important institutes: the Heart & Vascular Institute, the Mischer Neuroscience Institute, the Texas Trauma Institute, and the Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Sports Medicine Institute.

This hospital is the only one in Houston verified as a Burn Center by the American Burn Association. It started Life Flight in 1976, the first air ambulance service in Texas, which still serves Houston and nearby areas today. Doctors at the hospital performed the first successful liver transplant in Houston and the first living-donor transplant for a baby in the country.

The campus has 1,104 beds for patients, including special areas for children, women, heart and vascular care, and adults.

Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital

Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital is inside Memorial Hermann–Texas Medical Center and is part of the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions. It has one of the largest neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) in the country and is one of only two Level IV NICUs in Southeast Texas. The NICU treats over 1,000 premature babies each year.

The hospital is known for The Fetal Center, where specialists treat babies before they are born. They perform special surgeries inside the mother’s womb for babies with certain birth conditions. Their doctors did the first surgery in Texas for a condition called spina bifida after a major study.

Memorial Hermann Heart & Vascular Institute

The Memorial Hermann Heart & Vascular Institute is the only hospital just for heart care in the Texas Medical Center. It is a big building with eight floors and lots of space.

Mischer Neuroscience Institute

The Mischer Neuroscience Institute helps people with diseases of the brain and spine. It was the first place in Texas to bring together experts in neurology, neurosurgery, neuroradiology, and rehabilitation. The institute has special rooms for surgery and treatments.

It was the first neurosurgery center in Texas to use tiny surgery methods, special imaging techniques, and a unique treatment called gamma knife radiosurgery. The institute works together with UTHealth and Memorial Hermann–Texas Medical Center.

TIRR Memorial Hermann

TIRR Memorial Hermann is a hospital with 119 beds that helps people get better after serious brain or spine injuries or illnesses. In 2012, it was named one of America’s best hospitals for the 23rd time in a row by U.S. News & World Report.

Rankings

In 2010, Memorial Hermann–Texas Medical Center was recognized for its work in several areas by the U.S. News & World Report. It was placed in the top 50 for kidney disorders, gynecology, heart and heart surgery, urology, and pediatric kidney disorders. This shows the hospital’s strength in caring for patients in these important health areas.

Transportation

Memorial Hermann has a train station nearby called the Memorial Hermann Hospital-Houston Zoo Station on the METRORail Red Line. You can also fly into Houston using either Houston Hobby or George Bush Intercontinental Airport, both of which have airplanes from many companies.
