Mussau Island is the largest island in the St Matthias Islands, which belong to Papua New Guinea. It is located in the New Ireland Province and is known for its rich and varied plant and animal life. The island is covered mostly by thick, old-growth rainforest that rises over hills.

Mussau has many special plants that are found only there, with over 243 types that grow nowhere else in the world. The island is also home to at least 47 different kinds of butterflies that live naturally there.
