Order of the Sun of Peru
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
The Order of the Sun of Peru (Spanish: Orden El Sol del Perú), formerly known as the Order of the Sun, is the highest award given by the nation of Peru to honor important civil and military achievements. It is the oldest civilian award in the Americas, first created in 1821. The design of the award features the sun, which is linked to Inti, the Incan sun god. People believed Inti was an ancestor of the ruler in the ancient Incan Empire that once ruled over Peru. This special award remains a symbol of great honor in Peruvian history.
History
The Order of the Sun of Peru was first created on October 8, 1821, by General José de San Martín when he arrived in Lima. It was made to honor people who did great things during the fight against the Spanish Royalists. There were three levels to this award: Founder, Meritorious, and Associate.
However, the award was stopped four years later in 1825 because many people began using it like a special title of nobility. Then, in 1921, the award was brought back to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Peru's independence.
Classes
The Order of the Sun of Peru has several levels of awards. These include Grand Collar, Grand Cross with Diamonds, Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer, and Knight.
