Pectinodon is a group of small, meat-eating dinosaurs that lived about 66 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period. It belongs to a family of dinosaurs called troodontids, which were known for their sharp teeth and clever behaviors.

Today, scientists recognize only one true species of Pectinodon, named Pectinodon bakkeri. Sometimes, it is also called Troodon bakkeri. We know about this dinosaur mostly from its teeth, which were found in places where many other dinosaurs lived long ago.

Studying these teeth helps scientists learn about how Pectinodon lived and what it ate. Even though we have few fossils, what we do have gives important clues about life in the time of the dinosaurs.

History of discovery

Hypothetical life restoration

In 1982, a scientist named Kenneth Carpenter discovered some dinosaur teeth in Wyoming and named them Pectinodon bakkeri. The name comes from a Latin word for "comb" and a Greek word for "tooth", because the teeth had special comb-like edges. These teeth belonged to an adult dinosaur and were about 6.2 mm long. Later, another scientist found a similar tooth in Uzbekistan and named it Pectinodon asiamericanus, but many experts now think this name might not be correct.

Over the years, scientists have studied these teeth and discussed whether they belong to a group called Troodon or if they are their own special group. In 2011, researchers decided that Pectinodon bakkeri should be treated as its own genus. They also think that many other teeth found in North America from the same time might belong to new, undiscovered species, but more study is needed to be sure. In 2013, scientists confirmed that Pectinodon bakkeri is a valid species and that its teeth have been found in both Wyoming and nearby areas.

Description

Pectinodon is known only from its teeth, but its family, the Troodontidae, is better understood from more complete fossils. These were small, bird-like dinosaurs with feathers, two legs, big eyes, and big brains. Like their close relatives, the dromaeosaurids, they had a special curved claw on the second toe of each foot. To learn more, see the Troodontidae article.

Although we only have teeth from Pectinodon, these teeth tell us a lot. Studies of troodontid teeth suggest they ate soft things like small animals, insects, or dead creatures they found. Their teeth were not built for very tough food, unlike those of dromaeosaurids or tyrannosaurids. Some researchers think troodontids might have eaten a mix of plants and animals. This idea was supported by a study using stable isotopes from tooth enamel to learn about their ancient environment.
